A question to fellow Linux modders...

Wed Apr 22, 2009, 9:18 AM
I've always felt that the weakest point of my screens and mods has been my icon choice.

Sometimes, I find an icon theme that fits my screen perfectly, so that's OK.

But sometimes I might find the base of an icon theme that fits, but I need to change the folders with something else, for example. Or I might need to change some systray icons. Or perhaps a few navigation buttons need changing.

Little things like that.

So... fellow modders... what little icon theme modding tips can you give me? If I want to change the folder icon used, what do I replace? How do I STOP icons being displayed as well, for another example?

POUR ONTO ME YOUR KNOWLEDGE.

Well, for folder change only, i just change the base SVG, for example, if I'm using the icon theme Human but i want to the folder icon to be displayed throughout the system as GNOME-Human from GNOME Colors icon theme, i go to /usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/places, do a backup of folder.svg, and then i replace it with the GNOME-Human folder.svg

To make "invisible" folders, just use the same "technique" as above, but replace the folder.svg for a blank transparent icon SVG

Now, for "hide" all icons throughout the system i don't know, but if you use GNOME, you can hide a lot of icons though the GNOME appearance preferences.

I don't know if i understood you well, hope it helps somehow.

Ki was released???? :excited:

oh ya icons :D Ya, my icons suck as well. I guess, changing all the tray icons if you want to show a tray is key. As for changing those... trial and error. It takes a long time, make sure you back up the original. Folders and icons for programs are easy to change. Just go into the properties and change the icon :D. If you don't want to have something visible, replace it with a blank transparent png.

yeah replacing the images in the icon pack is the only way to create the effect of "no icons"

I guess it was more icon names I was after. Like if I have an icon theme but want to change the folder graphic, do I change folder.png or gnome-fs-folder.png or any other of the LOADS of different folder names there are in an iconset?

I'm not understanding very well : /

You want to just change the folder graphic?
Why you want to change the folder name?
Isn't folder names a pattern? Just change the folder graphics will do the trick, doesn't?
